Modern Media Project

The 18th Century is sort of a "mini-unit" in lit made up of 3 pieces:

"To the Ladies" by Lady Mary Chudleigh
"The Rape of the Lock" by Alexander Pope
"A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift

"To the Ladies" deals with the topic of Women's Rights
"The Rape of the Lock" deals with the trivial priorities of the upper class
"A Modest Proposal" deals with poverty and overpopulation issues

You have 2 options for this assignment:

1.  You must choose some element of modern culture (a song, tv show, movie or book) that highlights one of the three above issues. Explain why you chose this particular example of culture and explain what social issue (women's rights, apathy of the rich, poverty) that it draws attention to, and HOW it effectively conveys the message.

Questions:

a) What type of media is used?
b) What social issue is highlighted in the video/song/book etc?
c) Give 2 specific scenes/words/lyrics that make a powerful point about this issue?
d) Who is the target audience for this work?
e) How does the media specifically portray the message?
f)Why is this an effective way to get the message across?

OR

2. You must find an example of SATIRE that highlights an issue in society. Please explain what the issue is that is being highlighted and what SPECIFIC techniques are used to draw attention to the issue.
Please answer the following questions:

a) What type of medium is this?
a) What issue in society is being ridiculed?
c) Give 2 specific scenes/words/lyrics that make a powerful point about this issue.
d) HOW is satire being used (exaggeration, sarcasm, irony, etc.)
e) Who is the target audience?
f) Why is this an effective way to get the message across?

Satire: "Stupid Girl" by Pink

a) Music Video

b)The social issue this video is drawing attention to is that society turns women into objects that are supposed to have a certain body type and who are supposed to behave in certain ways to attract guys. Young girls are pressured to conform to certain stereotypes.

c) One key scene is where there is a shot of Pink as the President (formal dress, wearing glasses, and giving a speech) then directly followed by the scene of her dancing like the typical back-up dancers in rap videos (with very little clothing and suggestive moves.) The woman has gone from being a PERSON with an identity and ideas and power-to an OBJECT with only a body. A second key part of the song is the section that goes:

"I'm so glad that I'll never fit in
That will never be me
Outcasts and girls with ambition
That's what I wanna see"

This is important because the speaker is rejecting the stereotypical expectations for the way women are supposed to look and behave.

d) Specific techniques of satire are:
Exaggeration: the scene of girls sharing a toothbrush to vomit in a public washroom, the scene of the spray on tan where she is completely orange, the scene of her hitting a pedestrian as she is driving, the scene of her inflating her chest to get the attention of her boyfriend etc. etc. are all exaggerated and humorous but still making a point. She also highlights points from many actual music videos (where women behave in a "slutty" way like the scene of her dancing beside a rapper and the scene of her on the car and of the video she's making with her boyfriend).
Sarcasm: "Oh my god you guys, I totally had more than 300 calories/That was not sexy, no...I WILL BE SKINNY"
Caricature: The video exaggerates and distorts some characteristics of female celebrities like the sunglasses, little dogs, no brain etc.

e) The target audience is likely mostly female ages (?) 10 to 35?

f) What makes this video effective is the humour because many of the scenes are quite funny but a little realistic too. Many women feel pressured to look a certain way and act a certain way because of TV and music videos and advertisements. The visuals in the video are constantly changing and it is an interesting video to watch so it is a good choice of medium to try and get this message across. Music videos are very popular with young people (including girls) so it is likely that they would see this video and it would make them think.

Chase: The Majestic Plastic Bag

This video is a mockumentary

The social issue is that the people of the world are using too much plastic and it is ending up in the wrong places such as the pacific garbage dump when it could be recycled to keep the environment healthy.

A key scene is when the bag finally makes it to the pacific dump and the narrorator states that the bag will never actually degrade and instead it will only break down into smaller pieces which will eaten by animals which can kill them. Another key scene is when all the bags are trapped in the aqueduct and it ends up looking disgusting and there is a massive deposit of not only bags but other trash as well. This is important because it doesn’t glorify the planets situation and shows it how it really is.

Specific techniques that are used are using professional narrators that sound very official. Using humor and sarcasm as well as stating facts and sounding glad about it when inn reality the consequences are horrible.

The target audience is 5-100 as long as people are aware of their surroundings and what impact they can have either positively or negatively on the planet then they are the target audience.

What makes this video effective is the serious tone that it is presented in aswell as using humor and not talking down to the people who are considered to be they problem. It has a mature stance on the topic and uses logic and sarcasm in a symbiotic relationship to get the point across.

"We are the World" Lindsay

a).  The type of media used is a song

b).  The social issue highlighted is Poverty.

c).  Lyrics that portray powerful points include "There are people dying, and its time to lend a hand to life." and "Let us realize that change can only come when we stand together as one."

d). The target audience is for teens and older.

e).  This song specifically illustrates the message of poverty in many ways.  The song "We are the World" contains many big names such as Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder and Cyndi Lauper which brought and continues to bring awareness about people in Africa.  This song is easily relatable to virtually anyone making it emotionally appealing and the fact that proceeds from the single were going to charity satisfied buyers.  Powerful lyrics send an inspirational message to listeners on how they can help poverty stricken individuals.

d).  This is an effective way on getting the message out because bringing many big names together for the first time to create a single for "USA for Africa" a charity captures the interest of many people.  A catchy song really helps to get the message out on poverty and many other issues because it can be played anywhere and in different countries.

Satire "Where is the Love?" Colin hansen

D) the main target is all the men and woman in india that are poor and have nothing
E)it portrays the message because alot of people go on to youtube and it well tell people whats happing over there and make them do somthing about it.

Desi - "Another Day In Paradise"

1. A video from youtube
2. The social issue highlighted in this song is poverty
3. 1. "She's got blisters on the soles of her feet, she can't walk, but she's trying"
-It's a powerful image, shows the girl tired, can't walk but she still trys.
2. "Oh, think twice, it's just another day for you, you and me in paradise. Just think about it"
-Although we think we have it hard somtimes, we really don't compared to other places in the world. Sometimes we take it for granted.
4. Older people would because it's an older song
5. 1.It shows powerful images in the music video at 1:17 of homeless kids
2.At 3:58 it shows a bunch of homeless people all laying on the sidewalks trying to stay warm.
3.It compares the rich and the poor. "She calls out to the man on the street, sir, can you help me? It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep" Shows a poor girl asking a richer man for help.
4.The images in the music video are touching and can play with peoples emotions making them feel sad for the less fortunate.
6. It's a good music video that shows powerful images of kids and adults who are homeless and just barely getting by and it makes the audience sad and it gets the message across to them.

Shandi (TO THE LADIES!)

This video shows satire. It is a parody of womans rights and how woman shouldnt be aloud to speak there minds or share there opinions to men because only "men" are aloud to do that, but woman are slowly progressing and starting to take action by doing it anyway. The scene that caught my eye is when the woman at the dinner table gives her opinion about politics to the men. That right there is a very big step in the history of women. Back in the day woman wouldnt dare get involved in politics but now we are not afraid to voice our opinion about it. The next scene that caught my eye was when the husband of that woman drags her away from the table after she spoke her opinion, because hes embarassed that she tried to take part in a "mans" conversation. This is powerful because it shows that men are afriad of woman being independant and powerful. They over exagerate the part where the woman speaks up about politics and then men give her an angry glare, and her husband drags her away from the tableThey dont want us females to have any sort of control or domination. That same scene is also exagerated, because in modern day a man would never dare put his hands on a woman like that in front of other people because she spoke her opinion. They showed parody when they had the male brain and the female brain. They made it seem as though the male brain was taking in lots of knowlodge while the womans brain was not, and was just confused and scrambed. Its funny because men often say that womans minds are everywhere and that we are very "confusing". Parody again pops up when the woman says she doesnt know anything about politics, and starts talking about children. Now a days woman have a very high rank in politics. Some of the best politicians are woman. The target audience for this clip is definately men and woman. Mainly teens to adults. This is an effective way to show woman that yes they can speak out. Men may not like it but we can. GO GIRLS GO!!!!

Connor-"R-E-S-P-E-C-T"

1. The media being used is obviously a song

2. The social issues being brought up is repeated with a passion throughout the song, that women demand and deserve respect

3. Lines the signify the importance: "Is for a little respect when you come home" and "R-E-S-P-E-C-T find out what it means to me"

4. The target audience for this song is more or less women everywhere

5. It portraits its message with repetition of words, clever rhyme schemes, added emphasis on important words such as "RESPECT", and the lyrics themselves connect to its target audience in such a way that most of these women can relate to what the singer is trying to say and thats what made this piece so successful in the first place, and ultimately its why you still hear it to this day

6. Its effective because the song truly hits home, its something people can listen to, relate to and truly appreciate, but it also is a song that is very catchy and its message is spread by the many people who sing the powerful lyrics of this song and this is why we still hear it to this day

Mitch W.- Social Media Project

 A) This is a video
 B) Families and children not getting enough exercise, and Wii fit not actually getting people active. The 'rich' being in the luxury of this because they can afford a Wii.
 C) "You  don't want to spend $3.00 on a hula hoop? Then spend $300 on the Wii!" "Instead of having your kids to go out side and play and get exercise, why not have them stand in front of the TV. That eliminates your cost on soccer registration."
 D) It is being used through irony.
 E) Target audience is 10-60+. Everybody who is involved with Wii Fit technology.
 F) Because its so sarcastic that it just proves the point and puts it across so well that it hits our society spot on. We don't get enough activity now a days, children don't go out to play as much as they used too. Its all technology orientated and you get your activity on a "Wii Fit Board". Which really isn't doing anything.

Jess Heinrich - Social Media Project - Modern Family Satire

A) Modern Family is a faux-documentary style, comical television show.

B) Modern family intertwines the chronicles of three exceptionally diverse families, satirically mocking the ideal ‘traditional family’ society has created throughout history. This show points out the evolving definition of “family” and at the same time uses satire through stereotypes to show cultural anxiety about the traditional families and rolls we are expected to take, as well as the imperfections every family typically has.

C) Cameron and Mitchell are a gay couple who have just recently adopted a baby from the Vietnam. Their constant tension provides a subtle reminder that gay marriage is a controversial issue in our society.

Gloria represents a young Latina women who represents how society portrays Latina, and other foreign women as sexual symbols. Gloria is a thick-accented, compassionate, naïve young women married to a wealthy, older man. Which points out social critique on women who marry older men for their money.

D) Satire is used throughout the T.V series using stereotypes, humor, and exaggeration.

E)The target audience varies throughout all ages. It was typically made for modern day families to relate to, and joke about, but when the pilot was released in 2009, it because one of the biggest shows across the country. Many people, of all ages, enjoy this show because almost anyone can relate in one way or another.

F) This is an effective way because it gives people the ability to relate it to their own lives, thus making it more meaningful and memorable.

Jeremy Hepso, Queen-I Want To Break Free

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self-satisfied I don't need you
I got to to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love

It's strange but it's true (hey yea)
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free baby
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I want to break free

(INSTRUMENTAL INTERLUDE)

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without, living without, living without you
by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows got to make it on my own
So baby can't you see
I've got to break free

I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah

I want I want I want I want to break free …

A) A music video from Youtube.

B) The social issue displayed in the music video is mostly the treatment of woman. However during the musical interlude it almost makes fun of our society. (The musical interlude is very weird I forgot it was in there...) The way they lift each other up almost like kings and when the one guy is eating grapes it seems that the people around him are reaching out from all angles to keep from dieing of starvation.

C) "When I walk out that door, Oh how I want to be free baby" is almost like the poem "To The Ladies" where she wants to be free from living and being almost like a slave to her husband. "I want to break free from your lies" is saying almost that if a man lies or does anything wrong he can almost get away with it. If a lady did that however they would be in seriouse trouble.

D) The target audience is pretty well everyone. Showing us in a satirical way how women are treated. I started to laugh as soon as I saw the video and the members of Queen dressed as woman and that was obviously ddone that way to capture peoples attention.

E) The media specifically portrays the message in a number of ways. First how the men are dressed up as woman and they video tape them in almost a demeaning matter. Also the lyrics and how they tell us a woman may love her husband but some are treated so poorly to the point they want to ignore their love and get away for their better interest. In the musical interlude it shows us almost the way of slavery, it is evident that they are connecting the ways of slavery used a thousand years ago to a womans life now. Maybe not on such an extreme level but how a woman slaves around the house on hours on end.

F) It is an effective way to get the message across because it is modern. Putting it on Youtube gives it the availability of it being seen alot higher. Also the fact that it is funny, if it was just a couple guys standing around singing it would not get watched as much.

(Reynold Gabriel) Talisma Narseen - One Women Against Islam!

a) youtube video

b) lack of respect for women

c) weak, fragile and utterly helpless, she musn't talk or even feed herself, she has to appear totally dependent.
All her life she's belonged to her father, but from this day on, she is not even a member of her own family. Now she belongs to her husband, a man she just met 2 days before...

d) wives, children

e)statistics, stories, emotional appeal, real voices heard etc.

f) Because it makes you believe, what's really going on!
and wants you to do something about it

f)Why is this an effective way to get the message across? yes  it is many people Listen to music and this is a good way to put it out in public.

Yeah! and it go a little sumthin like this...

[Verse 1 - Ludacris]
Now little Lisa is only 9 years old
Shes tryin to figure out why the world is so cold
Why she's all alone and they never met her family
Mamas always gone and she never met her daddy
Part of her is missin and nobody will listenin
Mama is on drugs gettin high up in the kitchen
Bringin home men at different hours of the night
Startin with some laughs usually endin in a fight
Sneak into her room while her mamas knocked out
Tryin to have his way and little Lisa says "ouch"
She tries to resist but then all he does is beat her
Tries to tell her mom but her mama don't believe her
Lisa is stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that hell is a place called home
Nothin else to do but get some clothes and pack
She says she's 'bout to run away and never come back.

[Hook - Mary J. Blige]
Runaway love

Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love.
[Verse 2 - Ludacris]
Little Nicole is only 10 years old
Shes steady tryin to figure why the world is so cold
Why she's not pretty and nobody seems to like her
Alcoholic step-dad always wanna strike her
Yells and abuses, leaves her with some bruises
Teachers ask questions she's makin up excuses
Bleedin on the inside, cryin on the out
There's only one girl who really knows what she's about
Her name is little Stacy and they become friends
Promise that they'll always be tight til the end
Until one day lil Stacy gets shot
A drive by bullet went stray up on her block
Now Nicole stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that hell is a place called home
Nothin else to do but get her clothes and pack
She says she's 'bout to run away and never come back.

[Verse 3 - Ludacris]
Little Erica is 11 years old
Shes steady tryin to figure why the world is so cold
So she pops x to get rid of all the pain
Cause she's havin sex with a boy whose 16
Emotions run deep and she thinks she's in love
So there's no protection he's usin no glove
Never thinkin bout the consequences of her actions
Livin for today and not tomorrows satisfaction
The days go by and her belly gets big
The father bails out he aint ready for a kid
Knowin her mama will blow it all out of proportion
Plus she lives poor so no money for abortion
Erica is stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that hell is a place called home
Nothin else to do but get her clothes and pack
She say she's 'bout to run away and never come back.

[Hook - Mary J. Blige]
Runaway Runaway [repeats til end]

Don't keep runnin girl
Running, running, running
Don't keep on running
Don't don't keep running
I know how u feel i been there
I was running away too
I will runaway with you
I will runaway with you
Running running running
Runaway runaway love
Don't keep running away
Ill run away with you
If you want me to

Yeah I can only imagine
What your goin through ladies
Sometimes i feel like running away myself
So do me a favor right now and close your eyes
And picture us running away together
And when we come back

Satire - Girlfriend

A) What type of medium is this?Music Video from Youtube

B) What issue in society is being ridiculed?
The not important common issues in teenager relationships.

C) Give 2 specific scenes/words/lyrics that make a powerful point about this issue.
She's like so whatever
You could do so much better
I think we should get together now
And that's what everybody?s talking about

Hey, hey, you, you, I don't like your girlfriend
No way, no way, I think you need a new one
Hey, hey, you, you, I could be your girlfriend

D) HOW is satire being used (exaggeration, sarcasm, irony, etc.)
The music video has a lot of ridicule and the clip also has a lot of  un-realistic views on how girls react to eachother.

E) Who is the target audience?
The music video targets the younger teenagers in our generation.

F) Why is this an effective way to get the message across?
Because Avril Lavigne is one of the most popular celebrities in the 20th century and is known around the world..

Taylor C.

If I Were a Boy - Beyonce

a) Music Video

b) Woman's Rights and how they aren't treated equally

c) "Cause he's taken you for granted and everything you had got destroyed" - This particular lyric can be related to many many woman. Whether you go through a divorce, are physically, emotionally, betrayed by him, something inside of you dies when you realise he's not the man you loved.
"Cause I know that she'd be faithful waitin for me to come home" - Men just expect that woman completely depend on them and that we would never leave them. It's not true. Woman can depend on themselves and not just a man. We are our own person.

d) The target audience it seems to me is both woman and men. It helps to show men how we feel in a relationship. For woman, it shows we can stand up for ourselves and not be dependant on a man.

e) The video uses powerful images as a woman being in a mans role and the man in the woman's role. They also show instances that happen everyday and how people feel in the situations.

f) The way they get the message across is powerful. Images, strong lyrics, and also a strong independent woman singing these lyrics all help to get the message across.

Eat the Rich Nikki Riddler

Eat The Rich Aerosmith

Wake up kid its half past your youth
Ain't nothin' really changing but the date
You a grand slammer, but you know Babe Ruth
You gotta learn how to relate
Or you'll be swinging from the pearly gate
Now you got all the answers, low and behold
You the right key baby, but the wrong keyhole, yo

Well I woke up this morning
On the wrong side of the bed
And how I got to thinkin'
About all those things you said
About ordinary people
And how they make you sick
And if callin' names kicks back on you
Then I hope this does the trick

'Cause I'm a sick of your complainin'
About how many bills
And I'm sick of all your bitchin'
Bout your poodles and your pills
And I just can't see no humor
About your way of life
And I think I can do more for you
With this here fork and knife

[Chorus:]
Eat the Rich: there's only one thing they're good for
Eat the Rich: take one bite now - come back for more
Eat the Rich: I gotta get this off my chest
Eat the Rich: take one bite now, spit out the rest

So I called up my head shrinker
And I told him what I'd done
Said you'd best go on a diet
Yeah I hope you have some fun
And a don't go burst a bubble
On the rich folks who get rude
'Cause you won't get in no trouble
When you eats that kinda food
Now their smokin' up the junk bonds
And then they go get stiff
And they're dancin' in the yacht club
With Muff and Uncle Biff
But there's one good thing that happens
When you toss your pearls aside
Their attitudes may taste like shit
But go real good with wine
[Chorus]

Believe in all the good things
That money just can't buy
Then you won't get no belly ache
From eatin' humble pie
I believe in rags to riches
Your inheritence won't last
So take your Grey Poupon my friend
And shove it up your ass!
[Chorus]

Eat the Rich: there's only one thing they're good for
Eat the Rich: take one bite now - come back for more
Eat the Rich: don't stop me now I'm goin' crazy
Eat the Rich: that's my idea of a good time baby

Questions

A.)   The type of media that is used is a music video.
B.)   The song “Eat the Rich,” by Aerosmith relates to the theme of “The Rape of the Lock,” written by Alexander Pope. It portrays how some people feel as if the rich lack certain modest qualities. Such as the ability to by humble, or the ability to only to care about themselves.
C.)   The song talks about how the rich only care about themselves, and they have no care for anything that is happening around them. They are completely unaware of the misfortune of others around them.
“Now their smokin' up the junk bonds and then they go get stiff and they're dancin' in the yacht club.”
Since the rich are unable to have to ability to think about anything other than themselves, they are very absent minded toward those of a lower class.
“Then you won't get no belly ache from eatin' humble pie.”
D.)   The target audience for this song would be anyone from ages 18-45.
E.)    In order to get the message across of the misplaced priorities of the rich, Aerosmith uses powerful images.
“Eat the Rich: take one bite now, spit out the rest.” This line of the song shows how drastic the difference between the rich and the poor, and how drastic the actions of the poor have become.
During the music video, they have the band members with body parts in their mouth and hands as they are singing the chorus, to show the physical aspect of eating the rich.
Repetition is another technique that is used in this song.
“Eat the Rich: there's only one thing they're good for
Eat the Rich: take one bite now - come back for more
Eat the Rich: don't stop me now I'm goin' crazy
Eat the Rich: that's my idea of a good time baby”
Violence is also present in “Eat the Rich.”
F.)This is an effective way to show the misplaced priorities of the rich because many people like to listen to music, and if you make a song about an issue in society, then people are bound to listen.

Nicole K. Project

Pride and Prejudice

A) The media used for my project is a book.

B) Pride and Prejudice combats many issues for being such an old book, primarily based in the 1800's, issues such as women's rights aswell as the trivial priorities of the rich.
C) "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." The line stands alone from any other point or paragraph, maintaining the status as the central theme for the novel. In the particular time, women in order to survive needed to wholey rely on men for survival and status, since it was believed women did not have a lot to contribute to society. Women rarely inherited property--that was saved for the men of the family, without a husband were forced to live in poverty or take up the rest of their lives in a convent, and had very few, perhaps if any, legal rights. Nowadays, woman can indeed fend for themselves without the need of a man, and instead competing against other women for men, they compete for a respectable place in the work force.
Throughout Pride and Prejudice, those who could indeed afford to go to balls certainly attended, for it was a gathering of the more fortunate. The certain people who made a pretty penny, such as Mr. Darcy who recieved 10,000 per annum, or Mr. Bingley who recieved 5,000 per annum were given more regard from the upper class than perhaps those who man 200 per annum, or even 1,000 per annum. Starting chapter XVI, Mr. Collins takes notice to Lady Catherines chimney, "The chimney-piece alone had cost eight hundred pounds." (Pg.57) Chimney-pieces were mainly the centre of a room, and the better chimney-piece one had, if one at all, determined the wealth of said person. Nowadays, not many people focus on chimney's, most focus on having a roof over their head, or having enough money instead of living paycheck to paycheck.

D) The target audience for Pride and Prejudice varies, being a book that was written over 200 years ago, most people of my generation would not choose to read such a novel for the language that it is written in, and the topic on top of that. Most teenagers aren't interested in reading a book that dates as far back as Pride and Prejudice does, but I'd say, if one had the interest and the understanding of such language they could try and tackle the book. An appropriate age group would be 16/17 and up.

E) Comparisons arise throughout the entirety of Pride and Prejudice, usually comparing the lives of Mr. Darcy and the Bingley's compared to the lives of The Bennets. Those who had more of a status in the upper class, seemed from those below them, to have a more air of pride in everything that they intended to do, even walking, talking, or attending formal events. Pride is another major theme in Pride and Prejudice, hence the title..aswell as prejudice..and they tie together perfectly.
"Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously...Pride relates more to our opinions of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us."

Emotional appeal is another technique Jane Austen uses to get her points across. The story, though it has deeper issues is centrally based on a love story that could go head to head with many other love stories and come out on top. Jane Austen was ahead for her time, and her stories seem to last the test of time, so the story brings in most of the target audience and then introduces them to the other issues.
Jane Austen uses elevated language and powerful images throughout her novel, not as pictures, but as the writing she presents Pride and Prejudice in. As women had not many rights back in the 1800's, Pride and Prejudice makes Austen's opinion come across as not sudden, direct and angry, but as just a situation and problem that women should not be subjected to. And that marrying a man is not every women's true hope and goal in life. "
"Loss of virtue in a female is irretrievable; that one false step involves her in endless ruin; that her reputation is no less brittle than it is beautiful; and that she cannot be too much guarded in her behaviour towards the undeserving of the other sex."

Contrast is the 4th way that Austen chooses to get both issues across in the book. She makes each issue stand out among the rest of the novel per chapter, without overpowering and 'watering down' the rest of the content in the book. Each issue, aswell as the background love story, complete the story to make it truly memorable to those who read it, to not understand the story but understand the issues presented.

F) Those who love reading, and those who have already read Pride and Prejudice will eat up the content just aswell as someone who chooses to watch the movie, or not watch the movie or read the book. The issues are there, Jane Austen chooses to bring them into the light.

Marrissa Project

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

a) Book

b) The social issue highlighted in this book is the future society if we don't act now. George Orwell's setting is a future society that allowed things to become worse and worse without anyone stepping in. It shows the ridiculous world we would potentially live in if we don't figure out we need to change.

c) One key scene that allows the power of the message to come through is their "Hate Week" which is a huge event in Oceania. The citizens prepare for it like they would Christmas's. However, rather than being with family and singing Christmas carols the comrades celebrate by chanting about death destruction and whatever else the government wants them to hate. Another powerful piece of the book is the slogan George Orwell creates for the party: "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength". The Statement in itself is contradicting. With this exaggeration one sees the outrageuosness of the society but what they don't realise is that this is where our society is going if we don't choose to act.

d) The target audience for this piece is 18+

e) The message is specifically portrayed through:
Exaggeration: The book shows the perfect "Utopian" society which is actually full of hate, resentment for the leader and pessimism. No one is happy and they are forced into extreme situations such as "hate week". War and conformity is extremely exaggerated in this book. "Big Brother is always watching" meaning the government is using video surveillance on everyone to ensure no one steps out of line. It's exaggerating that the government will take complete control if we don't choose to stop it and vote and have a voice in who we want to lead our country.

f) What makes the book effective in getting the point across is the bleak and brutal story line. It forces you to look at the path society is on and actually want to stop it. At the time George Orwell wrote this book more people were reading meaning the book would have been read by many and more and more people would hear the message and want to help with it. No one wants to live in a "Utopian" society like Oceania.

Troy 18th Century

Primordial – The Coffin Ships

a) Song lyrics

b) The higlited issue is the famine that ravaged Ireland for four years and the 3 million people that starved.

c) “Young hearts born with grief”
“Lost to Ireland, lost in vain”

d) The target audience is men/women 16-40 (metalheads)

e) You can understand the song because the lyrics are clear and the lyrics are specific and easy to understand, Lyrics such as “The creak of the burial cart” helps you visualize how it was to be in Ireland during the famine. “A season of stolen youth” speaks of how the kids couldn’t have a good childhood because of how there was no food and most of them were starving and dying.

f) The song is effective because it sounds great and is a great tribute to the past of Ireland, the band being from Ireland. Its lyrics make you visualize the scene and the talk of violence and how people died is in the lyrics.

Lyrics:
Young hearts born with grief
Shall pay the penalty of truth
A season of stolen youth
Shall teach old hearts to break

It feels like I've been here before
Here to where the animals lay down to die
So we stood alone on a distant store
Our broken spirits in rags and tatters

Nerve and muscle, heart and brains
Lost to Ireland, lost in vain
Pause and you can almost hear
The sounds echo down through the ages
The creak of the burial cart
Here in humiliation and sorrow
Not mixed with indignation
One is driven to exclaim
Oh god, that bread should be so dear
And human flesh so cheap[*]

Young hearts are born with such grief
We have paid the penalty of truth
A season of our stolen youth
Shall teach our hearts to break

Ashleigh S.- Satire Project

 Animal Farm by George Orwell

1.    Animal Farm is a novella (small novel) written by George Orwell.
2.    The issue being ridiculed is both Communism and the Russian Revolution. It’s clear that Orwell find Communism to be entirely unrealistic concept, and he is satirizing how easily a communist country can easily become a nation plagued by overbearing leaders who have too much power. Communism is not an efficient way to rule society.
3.    One key scene is when the oldest boar, Major, calls all the animals to order, and proposes that they should be the ones to rule the farm, not the humans who have no idea how to organize it. They create a song called “the Beasts of England”, and call their theory “animalism”, and come up with a set of rules that they all must follow (the main one being that all beasts are equal to others). This is important because it’s clear that Major satirizes Lenin, the revered leader of the Bolshevik Revolution, Orwell makes fun of how they established a bloodless coup to get hold of the farm (and the Russian government) Another key scene is the ending scene, where the pigs are no longer distinguishable from what were the human, the name has been changed back to it’s old one, for reasons of “politically correctness” and most importantly the Seven Commandments have changed to reflect the now-dictator Napoleon’s will, “all animal are equal, but some are more equal than others”. It show the power that one animal can have, and how power is not shared  equally throughout the farm

4.    Satire is used throughout the novella:
Caricature- Every character in Animal Farm is a caricature of real, famous historical leaders of the Russian Revolution. Old Major represents Lenin, Snowball- Leon Trotsky, Napoleon-Stalin, and Boxer and overzealous Communist party worker. All are extremely exaggerated and only very slightly true to character.
Irony- There is many sources of irony in Animal Farm, perhaps the most famous and the most humorous is, indeed the quote, “all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”. The idea that the animals would actually buy that is outrageous, but Orwell fairly accurately conveys the corruption of communist society.
Juxtaposition- The two characters of Boxer and Napoleon were used to symbolize the opposites between the leaders and the common people, and what was expected of them. The reader can feel that Boxer truly believes in the cause, but can get the sense that Napoleon is only using animalism as a way to gain power. This is satirizing the real disparity in the USSR, and is juxtaposition between the two
Exaggeration- The entire idea of animals as communists, and most especially the leaders as being pigs, satirizes what kind of people the communists are. It’s not very flattering to be portrayed as an evil, dictatorial pig, the way that Stalin was.
5.    The target audience is members of a non-communist country, probably intellectuals, of over 18 years of age
6.    The novella is an effective way to get the information across because it is very short, the language is not overly complex, and the satire is relatively easy to understand. It sounds like a children’s story, but with a hidden message. And the humour in it, while slightly old-fashioned, is still quite funny,

a) Youtube Music Video
b) poverty and the lack of care.
c)"you polluted everything and now the third worlds gone the waters poisoned where im from the third world son, 700 children died by the end of this song". these lyrics are just some ways to show the lack of care and the poverty in third world countries
d) A younger group of people is the target audience because we are the future that needs to take a stnd and see wwhat other countrys are like and its about time a revolution happened.
e) he speaks the truth and the lyrics are actually about his life and what he went through and how it will stop and people will care when a revolution comes.
f)because it opens the eyes of people who just dont know about the other countries situatuions or just dont cqare  be cause many people listne and respect what he says .

Rebecca Allies-Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous

Lifestyles of the Rich and The Famous

1) Music Video
2) This song/video highlights the difference between the rich and the poor, many of the rich complain about having all this money and media attention when there are many people in the world living on the streets and starving
3)I'd like to see them spend a week\Livin' life out on the street/I don't think they would survive
Lifestyles of the rich and the famous/They're always complainin'
4) The Target audience is everyone but mostly teens to inspire change
5) The ways that this song shows its message is:
Violence-Well did you know when you were famous you could kill your wife
And there's no such thing as 25 to life
Hyperbole:And did you know if you were caught and you were smokin' crack
McDonalds wouldn't even wanna take you back
You could always just run for mayor of D.C
Contrast:I'd like to see them spend a week
Livin' life out on the street
Lifestyles of the rich and the famous
Hyperbole:Well they've got mansions
Think we should rob them

6) I think this is effective because they are giving it to you straight and its basicly saying instead of worrying about simple problems think about other people who have nothing

Justin Gabriel-To the Ladies!!

A)Music Video. A Song by Lesley Gore, You Don't Own Me
B)The Social Issue this video is drawing attention to is that Men are treating women like nothing. "You don't own me, I'm not just one of your many toys. You don't own me, don't say I can't go with other boys" This shows that guys didn't let that girl do anything he didnt want her to do. She doesn't have the freedom she wanted.
C)1 "You don't own me, I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me, don't say I can't go with other boys"
2 "A-a-a-nd don't tell me what to do
Oh-h-h-h don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display"
D)
E) Any one that listens to her kind of music.
F) People Listen to music. it can change people in anyway, some people will now understand what some women will have to go threw and how it effects their lives

Spencer

Satire in the Simpson's is always entertaining, and in the episode when they make fun of how our society is obsessed with technology, especially the Apple products. The episode shows satire by protruding Steve Jobs as somewhat god and everybody listening to his very will. It reflects on how we are manipulable and how anything that is trendy or new will be bought and crazed over thoughtlessly.

a) Video
b) Obsession with technology
c) The immense amount of people at the Apple store and the godly appearance of Steve Jobs
d) They show how easily people are obsessed and manipulated with technology (especially new)
e) Teenagers-Elderly
f) People love and listen to the Simpson's, because of it's humour and truth in ways

Spencer Nicol Media Project

a) Television show
b) The issue being ridiculed is pirates in Somalia that are attacking, kidnapping and killing innocent people
c) If you watch the full episode one of the scenes Cartman and the pirates try to invade a yacht. This is powerful because it shows the harm the pirates are causing to foreigners. Another powerful scene is when Cartman and his friends walk into the building where they are expecting all the pirates to be (like in the movies with treasure) and they find out they are all poor and have nothing. This scene is important because it shows how bad of shape the country is actually in.
d) Satire is being used in a humorous way to humiliate the Somalian pirates. It is wrong but they get their point across successfully.
e) Ages 15-40
f) It is an effective way to get the message across because it is funny. When something is pointed out in humour, the younger audiences will pay better attention. Therefor they will be more informed.

By the way. I could not put all the scenes I used in the link because they may be to inappropriate for school.

Rich world, poor world, everyday it's gettin' modified
Rich world, poor world, aren't you glad you're on the Western side,
Individual luxury just might be the trump of the game,
If you come back round with a gun at your head, I'm sure the view will never be the same
I heard something that you never been told,
You'll have trouble just trying' to get old,
I got something, gonna give you the word,
I'm interested if you have heard,
I don't really mean to bring you right down,
The safest place for you's way under the ground,
A "HOT SOMETHIN'" that you never been told,
Told, you been told, you been told, you been told, you been told, you been told

Rich world, poor world, fewer places every day to hide,
Rich world, poor world, I like it better on the Western side,
A growing epidemic of ignorance been keeping me on the run,
With a jaded ear and a whole lot of fear, we're gonna wither up one by one
I got something that you never been told,
Gonna have trouble just tryin' to get old,
I got something that you never heard,
Come on now, just spread the word,
I got somethin', gonna make you hip,
Now don't go blabbin' and let it slip,
For what you got I think you over paid,
I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid

"Hi there little starving Asian child with bloated belly, open sores, and look of despair My, you are hungry, aren't you? You know, I'd love to help you get enough nutrition to perpetuate your misery a little further, but right now I've just got to finish this thesis on the Divine Right of Kings See you tomorrow"

"Hi there little golden Greekette, Capri-bound modern Venus, with fenced beach and medically transformed nose and midriff I know how heartbroken you are that your best friend beat you to Paris for the unveiling of the latest fashions, and I'd love to console you but, you see, I lost my right leg yesterday trying to scrounge up a shot of antibiotics Oh well"

Rich world, poor world, everyday it's gettin' modified
Rich world, poor world, I like it better on the Western side,
A growing epidemic of ignorance been keepin' us on the run,
With a jaded ear and a whole lot of fear, we're gonna wither up one by one
I heard somethin', gonna make you blue,
Don't get excited cause you know it ain't new,
I got somethin' gonna make you hip,
Now don't go blabbin' and let it slip, you hear,
Now I don't mean to be bringing' you down,
You won't be safe till you're layin' in the ground,
For what you got I think you overpaid,
I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid
A.)A song, written about the despairity between rich people, and poor people.
B.)The differences between rich people, and poor people
C.)The lyric, "With a jaded ear and a whole lot of fear, we're gonna wither up one by one" shows that poverty is causing death and awful atrocities in the world. Another line that demonstrates the difference between rich and poor is, "A growing epidemic of ignorance been keepin' us on the run."
D.)Everyone on the surface of this earth.
E.)Repition of "Rich world, poor world", Contrast; "Hi there little starving Asian child with bloated belly." to "Hi there little golden Greekette, Capri-bound modern Venus.", Powerful images; "With a jaded ear and a whole lot of fear," "You won't be safe till you're layin' in the ground." Violence; "I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid." Hyperbole; "A growing epidemic of ignorance been keeping me on the run"
F.)It's a popular band, talking about a pressing issue in the world, this is a good way to get this message accross because it can appeal to many generations.

Modern Social Media Project - Ilona Pawlowski

The Girl Effect.
A) The media used is a youtube video

B) The issue highlighted in this video is focused on poverty. It also focuses on a method of improving poverty by focusing on a girl , a girl who is not well educated and a way to change that. It shows that many women in poverty don't get to make their own choices for themselves. They have many things to worry about as soon as they turn 12. This video focuses on how a girl is an important key of helping the number of  people  in poverty to lower.

C) First the video clip starts off saying " the world is a mess " which i think captures the viewers attention. Shortly after is says " what else is new?". It makes you think for a quick second how used to hearing everything about poverty and war doesn't effect us that much anymore but the fact is that it should. It is terrible that we think that way and not even do anything about it and think " I'm glad I'm not that person", but there are people out there who do care and want to help. The creator of this video certainly captured my attention. In the video it asks, " what if there was an unexpected solution? " I would of never thought it would of been a girl . That simple. This video shows how simple it could be. To start with young girls to get them motivated to help their family , village , country, and maybe even the world.

D) This video targets the audience of many people. I know for a fact that it captured my attention and made me think. There are people that have watched this who will actually make a difference to go and help with this " solution ". A solution that seems so simple, and that probably is.

E) This video shows many worlds that are made into images of words that make the video interesting. It places all these bold words and puts them together so you are still reading but in an exciting way. If this video was just a plain paragraph , it wouldn't grab peoples attention. This video has emotional appeal when the words" imagine her in poverty" pop up on the screen. The words are very bold in the video which i think are powerful images.

F) This is a great and effective way to get the message of poverty across because it is modern. Putting it on youtube in a video was a great way to get across to many people over the Internet and youth. This video was also put together in a way that I want to watch the whole entire video.

Bob Dylan - Ballad of Hollis Brown (Ryan Bushby)

Hollis Brown
He lived on the outside of town
Hollis Brown
He lived on the outside of town
With his wife and five children
And his cabin broken down

You looked for work and money

And you walked a rugged mile
You looked for work and money
And you walked a rugged mile
Your children are so hungry
That they don't know how to smile

Your baby's eyes look crazy

They're a-tuggin' at your sleeve
Your baby's eyes look crazy
They're a-tuggin' at your sleeve
You walk the floor and wonder why
With every breath you breathe

The rats have got your flour

Bad blood it got your mare
The rats have got your flour
Bad blood it got your mare
If there's anyone that knows
Is there anyone that cares?

You prayed to the Lord above

Oh please send me a friend
You prayed to the Lord above
Oh please send me a friend
Your empty pocket tell yuh
That you ain't-a got no friend

Your babies are crying louder

It's pounding on your brain
Your babies are crying louder
It's pounding on your brain
Your wife's screams are stabbin' you
Like the dirty drivin' rain

Your grass is turning black

There's no water in your well
Your grass is turning black
There's no water in your well
You spent your last lone dollar
On seven shotgun shells

Way out in the wilderness

A cold coyote calls
Way out in the wilderness
A cold coyote calls
Your eyes fix on the shotgun
That's hangin' on the wall

Your brain is a-bleedin'

And your legs can't seem to stand
Your brain is a-bleedin'
And your legs can't seem to stand
Your eyes fix on the shotgun
That you're holdin' in your hand

There's seven breezes a-blowin'

All around the cabin door
There's seven breezes a-blowin'
All around the cabin door
Seven shots ring out
Like the ocean's pounding roar

There's seven people dead

On a South Dakota farm
There's seven people dead
On a South Dakota farm
Somewhere in the distance
There's seven new people born
